What’s ACL reconstruction surgery?

ACL reconstruction surgery is a procedure that reconstructs a torn or ruptured anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in the knee. ACL tears most frequently occur during periods of intense sporting activity. Generally, surgery will involve replacing the damaged ligament using a graft, commonly from the patient's own tissue or from a donor. The aim is to restore stability and function to the knee joint, allowing patients to return to physical activity and everyday mobility.

Dr Jason Hockings is an experienced, Victorian trained Orthopaedic Surgeon based in Melbourne with subspecialist advanced training in elective hip, knee and shoulder surgery as well as general orthopaedic trauma surgery.

Jason performs the latest ACL reconstruction techniques including quadruple bundle ACL reconstruction utilising a single hamstrings tendon (instead of the traditional two tendon technique), minimising associated donor site morbidity. He may also utilise quads tendon if appropriate and performs a lateral extra-articular tenodesis to reinforce the ACL reconstruction as needed. These modern techniques ensure superior knee stability following your ACL reconstruction as well as faster recovery and return to sport.

After being awarded a public appointment as a consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Eastern Health in 2022, Jason then completed a post-training fellowship in the direct anterior approach for total hip arthroplasty and hip arthroscopy and sports surgery with Professor John O’Donnell in Melbourne, widely considered one of the most senior hip arthroscopists not just in Australia but internationally.

Jason has also completed an advanced training fellowship at the high-volume joint replacement/reconstruction centre in Edinburgh in the United Kingdom in 2022, gaining experience with complex primary and revision hip and knee replacement/reconstruction surgery in addition to robotic assisted joint replacement surgery.

In 2023, Jason then undertook a further advanced training fellowship in sports knee and shoulder surgery with Dr Ed Bateman in NSW, one of the nation’s most senior shoulder and sports surgeons, where he gained further experience with arthroscopic sports knee surgery and ACL/ligament reconstruction.
