St Vincent’s Private Hospital Melbourne offer a range of Introduction to Specialty Practice Programs (ISP). The programs are offered to Registered and Enrolled nurses who have completed a 12-month graduate program or experienced nurses are looking for a career change.
This is an opportunity for nurses to participate in a structured 6-month program in a specialty area which provides the following:
• Study days to provide the knowledge and skills required to practice within the specialty area
• Ongoing education support and mentoring in the clinical area by our educators and clinical staff
• Clear goals and objectives provided for nurses to achieve to the clinical expertise required to deliver high quality nursing care
• The opportunity for further career development to undertake post graduate studies (Registered Nurses)

The following programs are offered to Registered Nurses
The ISP program allows nurses to develop knowledge and skills to manage critically ill patients. Our Intensive Care Unit specialises in caring for post-operative patients following major cardiac and neurological surgery, as well as complex medical patients.
Components of this course includes developing advanced assessment skills to enable the delivery of high quality nursing care to the critically ill. Education delivery is provided by lectures plus clinical skills training and assessments.
The Intensive Care Unit is located at our Fitzroy Campus.
The ISP Program in Interventional Cardiology offers nurses the opportunity to develop knowledge and skills in the cardio-vascular systems and complex cardiac conditions including cardiac electrophysiology. The knowledge and clinical skills gained enables the delivery of high quality nursing care to patients undergoing interventional cardiology procedures.
This course is offered at our Fitzroy campus.
The following programs are offered to Registered and Enrolled Nurses
The ISP program offers nurse the opportunity to develop knowledge and clinical skills in Perioperative Nursing. The delivery of high quality peri-operative nursing care in our General Operating Rooms is aligned with ACORN Standards.
SVPHM offers a diverse range of surgical specialties including Orthopaedics, Cardiac Surgery, Thoracic Surgery, Cardiology, Neurosciences, Interventional Cardiology, Oncology, Paediatrics, Plastics and Reconstruction Surgery and Robotic Surgery.
Education delivery is provided by lectures plus clinical skills training and assessments.
The course is offered at all four campuses, Fitzroy, East Melbourne, Kew and Werribee.
The ISP program offers nurses the opportunity to develop knowledge and clinical skills in Anaesthetics and Post Anaesthetic Care Unit (PACU) Nursing.
This course incorporates the development of knowledge and skills required to deliver high quality nursing care to patients undergoing anaesthetic procedures and the nursing management of the patients in PACU.
Education delivery is provided by lectures plus clinical skills training and assessments.
The course is offered at all four campuses, Fitzroy, East Melbourne, Kew and Werribee.
NB. The Orthopaedic program is not taking enrollments for October 2024. We look foward to opening this program in 2025.
The Orthopaedic ISP program offers an opportunity for nurses to accelerate their practical orthopaedic skills whilst incorporating evidence based theoretical knowledge.
This program incorporates lectures run by orthopaedic surgeons, anaesthetists, physicians, radiographers, nursing and allied health staff plus clinical skills training and assessments.
The course is offered at Fitzroy, East Melbourne, Kew and Werribee.

Successful applicants will:
- Have Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) registration as a Registered Nurse/Enrolled Nurse.
- Have completed a minimum of 12 months experience in an acute care area.
- Be able to work in a self-directed capacity to complete all academic and clinical requirements of the program.
- Be an Australian Citizen or Permanent Resident.
- Be committed to work a minimum of three shifts a week.
