To celebrate individual stories, journeys, backgrounds and identities, we have interviewed Jo, St Vincent’s Private Hospital Werribee, Bookings Officer.

1. Can you share a bit about your background and what brought you to work in healthcare?

Jo: I worked 11 years in Corporate Sales at the Australian Open Tennis, my role entailed interactions with people from all over the world. After l had my children, l worked in hospitals as a Newborn Photographer, this was very rewarding to capture precious moments that will be cherished forever. When covid hit, we were no longer allowed in the hospitals. I then started working on front reception at St Vincent's Private Hospital Werribee and have since moved into Theatre Bookings. Working here is like one big family, everyone genuinely cares for one another!

2. What does diversity and inclusion mean to you in your role here at St. Vincent’s Private Hospital?

Jo: To be able to work with and engage with all types of people (staff, patients and doctors) and treat everyone equally.

3. How has your unique cultural or personal background influenced your approach to patient care?

Jo: Majority of people are very anxious coming into hospital. After having surgery, myself, l know it's very comforting when your greeted with compassionate people. For me, to be able to assist patients and build rapport especially with our regular oncology patients, hopefully helps ease the anxiety of their hospital visit.

4. What do you enjoy most about working in such a diverse environment at St. Vincent’s Private Hospital?

Jo: We have a very unique hospital environment. l love the different cultures and learning from one another.

5. What are some of the challenges you’ve faced in your career, and how have your experiences helped you overcome them?

Jo: Major challenge was not being able to do my job (Newborn photographer) due to covid. My role now at St Vincent's Werribee is very different, but l do find it equally rewarding supporting patients/doctors and staff.

9. What are some traditional dishes in your culture?

Jo: Pavlova, Lamingtons, Vegemite, BBQ - especially in summer!
