- Mixed reality a medical milestone for shoulder replacements
Dr Tim Yeoh, Orthopaedic Surgeon, is using mixed reality technology to perform shoulder replacement surgery at St Vincent’s Private Hospital Sydney, a first in New South Wales.
It enables a surgeon to view a 3D hologram of the patient’s anatomy and preoperative plan whilst operating.
“This mixed reality technology is probably the most exciting thing that’s happened in shoulder replacements over the last five years,” Dr Yeoh said.
During surgery, Dr Yeoh was able to visualise the hologram while wearing a headset, interacting and manipulating the image, enabling him to see and overlay the plan on the patient in real time.
“This is the beauty of this new technology, I can see it live…I can move the hologram into the surgical field, and really get that confidence that we are being accurate to our plan,” Dr Yeoh said.
This is another first in innovation for St Vincent’s Private Hospital Sydney. Dr Yeoh says, “This technology is a game changer for shoulder replacement surgery. We are committed to delivering excellence in orthopaedic care and this innovative technology allows us to deliver our plans accurately and reliably. This enables us to meet the unique needs of our patients.”
Dr Tim Yeoh is an Australian-trained orthopaedic surgeon with extensive experience in shoulder replacements. He is committed to continuing education and research allowing him to implement the most accurate surgical techniques to benefit his patients.
