Biography
Associate Professor Gallagher is a head and neck surgeon managing malignant and benign disease with a special interest in the management of human papilloma virus-related cancers.
Richard performs minimally-invasive surgery of the head and neck. In addition to undertaking Australia's highest volume da Vinci transoral robotic surgeries, he also has extensive experience in the endoscopic and open management of tracheal stenosis and tumours. Richard places enormous importance on the multi-disciplinary approach to patient care. He knows from firsthand experience how teamwork and collaboration can make a world of difference to the cancer patient’s journey.Richard is a graduate of the University of New South Wales and a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. Following completion of his surgical training in Australia in 1995, he undertook two further year-long fellowships in head and neck surgery at Brisbane’s Princess Alexandra Hospital and in sinus and skull base surgery at the University of Virginia in the USA.
He subsequently returned to Sydney to commence his appointment at St Vincent’s, where he established a functional endoscopic sinus surgery course, as well as a head and neck surgery outreach clinic in Moree. He is the Director of Cancer Services and Director of the Head and Neck Service at St Vincent's.
