Biography

Dr. Colin Walsh is an experienced Obstetrician and Maternal-Fetal Medicine (MFM) specialist with nearly 20 years’ experience.

MFM specialists are obstetricians who are experts in high-risk pregnancies, including women with medical disorders in pregnancy, twin pregnancies and women with previous pregnancy complications. MFM is the highest qualification an obstetrician can achieve; it requires years of additional advanced training. Most obstetricians do not hold an MFM qualification.

Colin is also very happy to look after healthy women having a normal, low-risk pregnancy and birth. He is proud of his high vaginal birth rate and also supports women who choose a caesarean delivery.

Colin’s areas of expertise include medical disorders in pregnancy (e.g. diabetes, epilepsy, thyroid disease); twin pregnancies; women with pregnancy complications (e.g. short cervix, pre-term birth, pre-eclampsia); babies with complications (e.g. fetal growth restriction, chromosomal disorders); IVF pregnancies and older mothers. In addition, he completed a 3-year fellowship in female pelvic floor disorders, which he finds invaluable in counselling women about their birthing options.

Prior to commencing full time private practice, Colin was a Senior Staff Specialist in the Maternal-Fetal Medicine Unit at Royal North Shore Hospital, where he also ran the Medical Disorders in Pregnancy Clinic.  He has worked in Dublin, Sydney, New York and Cambridge, at some of the most respected maternity hospitals in the world.

Colin has published more than 90 scientific papers, written chapters for major medical textbooks and holds a PhD from the University of New South Wales. He has presented his work at national and international conferences.
