Biography

Dr James Dimou possesses expertise in the clinical management and research of brain tumours. His neurosurgical philosophy emphasises the importance of providing compassionate, individualised patient care that is grounded in the best scientific evidence.

Dr Dimou graduated from the University of Melbourne in 2003, and has trained in Neurosurgery across a number of Australasian centres, becoming a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 2017. Dr Dimou spent a further two years in Canada expanding his training, through a combined clinical and research fellowship in Surgical NeuroOncology at the Foothills Medical Centre under the auspices of the University of Calgary. Dr Dimou then augmented his skills in brain tumour-related clinical care and scientific research with additional observerships in Zurich, Switzerland and Toronto, Canada, after receiving the COGNO Hubert Stuerzl Memorial Neuro-oncology Educational Award in 2016.

Dr Dimou is an active contributor to the neurosurgical research community. In 2013, he was awarded a PhD from the University of Melbourne, for his translational research exploring the molecular biology and therapeutic targeting of glioma stem cells, receiving accolades from the World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies (WFNS) for best research presentation by a Young Neurosurgeon two years earlier.

He continues to publish his own research, as well as act as a regular reviewer for both the World Neurosurgery journal and the Journal of Clinical Neuroscience.

Dr Dimou holds public appointments as a Neurosurgeon at The Royal Melbourne Hospital and Western Health. His appointment as a Clinical Lecturer in the Department of Surgery, University of Melbourne, underlines Dr Dimou’s commitment to medical and neurosurgical education.
