Biography
Clinical Associate Professor James Symons is an experienced Urologist specialising in the diagnosis and management of benign & malignant prostatic disease.
James believes in tailoring a patient’s care to their own unique circumstances, and ensures that all patients are fully informed. He and his team strive to make patients feel well-supported throughout their journey, no matter the complexity of the process.James offers patients a range of minimally-invasive BPH treatment options, and has extensive experience with robotic and focal treatment of prostate cancer. Associate Professor Symons is an expert in the diagnosis & treatment of prostate cancer, and is a pioneer in prostate cancer diagnosis. He is the chair of the SAN Prostate Multidisciplinary Team, where he is also a Director of it’s Prostate Centre of Excellence.
A/Prof James Symons is also one of the few Urologist to have RACS-accredited plastic surgery training. The attention to detail continues through to Urological Oncological surgery, and the microsurgical skills are utilised in microsurgery, including vasectomy reversal.
James leads the University of Sydney’s Surgical Endoscopy program, and is the Director of Australian Clinical Trials, a long-running research group delivering landmark and cutting-edge research in the prostate space (EMBARK, PROTEUS, MP4).
Associate Professor Symons’s research interests includes quality of life, minimally-invasive treatments of male lower urinary tract symptoms / BPH, prostate imaging and the application of MRI and PSMA PET to surveillance. He continues to author and review in high-impact publications, and holds academic appointments at the University of Sydney and the Australian National University.
