Biography

Dr. Marc-James Friso is an Australian-trained Orthopaedic Surgeon with subspeciality training in Hip Preservation Surgery and Foot & Ankle Surgery. He specialises in total hip replacement, including using the anterior approach, periacetabular osteotomy and hip arthroscopy. Foot & Ankle procedures include treating injuries, ankle stabilisation surgery, bunion corrections and procedures to treat foot and ankle arthritis.

Marc grew up in country Victoria where he attended high school before moving to study at The University of Melbourne. Marc underwent his Orthopedic training across Victoria and Tasmania. After obtaining his Fellowship from the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons Marc pursued fellowships in the two areas of Orthopaedic surgery that he is passionate about – Hip Preservation Surgery and Foot & Ankle Surgery.

At first glance it might seem that Foot & Ankle Surgery and Hip Preservation are very different, but if you take a closer look, you will see that both strive to get patients active and moving again. Marc endeavours to provide thoughtful, measured and comprehensive treatment for his patients’ hips and feet. This includes preserving intact joints to keep them moving and replacing painful worn out joints to get people up and going. At all times Marc’s practice is underpinned by his core values: Empathy, Ability and Principled Care. Marc makes it his mission to provide comprehensive care for patient’s needs, recognising where his patients are coming from and honouring that; doing his own very best to serve his patients with humility and dignity; and to strive for continual improvement.

Marc is an advocate of using scientific literature to ensure his patients receive evidence-based care and personalised outcomes. He is an active participant in scientific research and takes great pride in teaching junior doctors of all levels. Marc is an examiner for the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons Clinical Exam.

When he isn’t caring for his patients or chasing his toddler around, you will find Marc flyfishing on a river somewhere.

Better and fairer care. Always.

In a rapidly transforming world, St Vincent's has created a refreshed vision and strategy to help shape Australia's health and aged care future.
