Biography

Dr Richard Maguire is an Australian trained general surgeon with a sub-specialty interest in colorectal surgery.

Growing up in Townsville, Dr Maguire has always had a strong interest in regional surgery. This led him to relocate his family from the Gold Coast to Toowoomba.

Dr Maguire trained in general surgery in Queensland, rotating through hospitals in Cairns, Mackay and Ipswich, before completing his training at Robina and Gold Coast University hospitals. He obtained his FRACS in 2021 before completing a post fellowship year in acute and general surgery at the Townsville University Hospital.

Following this, Dr Maguire completed two sub-specialty training years in colorectal surgery at the Wollongong Hospital in NSW and the Gold Coast University Hospital, both of which are high volume centres dealing with complex benign and malignant colorectal pathologies. During these years he developed skills in laparoscopic and minimally invasive colon and rectal resections as well as managing pelvic floor disorders.

Dr Maguire looks after a variety of general surgical and colorectal conditions, including gallbladder pathology, hernias, and colon and rectal cancer. He also consults on benign colorectal conditions such as diverticular disease, inflammatory bowel disease, pelvic floor disorders and incontinence, as well as fistulas and haemorrhoids. He is GESA certified in upper and lower endoscopy and deals with general surgery emergency presentations.

Outside of surgery Dr Maguire enjoys spending time with his wife and two young children. He is a keen fisherman and enjoys anything sports related. Dr Maguire and his family are proud to call Toowoomba their home.
