Going home

Your obstetrician and midwifery staff will confirm when you and your baby are ready to go home. Expected discharge is day 4 for uncomplicated births and day 6 for caesarean births.

Before leaving the hospital, please finalise your account. Your partner can do this on your behalf.

Checkout time is 10.00 am.

Before taking your baby home for the first time, please ensure that an Australian Standards Approved car restraint or seat has been professionally fitted in your car. This is important for a safe journey home.

Looking out for complications

While maternal complications are extremely rare following birth, they can be serious and symptoms may include:

  • Redness, swelling at the site of an epidural or spinal anaesthetic 
  • Fever
  • Increasing back pain, especially near the insertion site of an epidural or spinal anaesthetic
  • Changes in the sensation of your legs, including numbness, tingling or weakness
  • Changes to your bladder or bowel control
  • A headache gets worse when you’re upright and eases when lying flat.

If you’ve noticed any of these symptoms — or if you have any other concerns — after you’ve gone home, please contact your GP or obstetrician as soon as possible.
